ANN, as you read last month, was privileged to finally be able to talk about something weve known about for a while... real-live Synthetic Vision for GA. As amazing as the concept may be, the reality is even more so. Garmin got this right... and right from the start. During a flight in an SVT-equipped DA40-XL, Aero-TV flew checked out each of the now-certified features of the G1000s SVT capabilities -- Highway In The Sky, Obstacle Clearance, Terrain Avoidance, Traffic Alerts... you name it... and came away feeling like the state of the art in the general aviation industry has just been raised by an astounding degree. And if you can wait about 24 hours, for the next Special Edition of Aero-TV, youll see that theyre not remotely done yet... but we cant say anymore about that... yet. Garmins Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT), is designed to fully integrate with the G1000... both present and past models. Garmins SVT presents a 3D depiction of terrain, obstacles and traffic on the G1000s primary flight-display (PFD) so that the avionics panel replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day. Garmins SVT blends information about the aircrafts position with topographic databases to create and display real-time 3D images. The information is presented on the G1000s large flight displays with XGA (1,024x768-pixel) resolution, superior sunlight readability and wide viewing angles. SVT presents the necessary information in ways that are easy to understand so pilots feel at ease interpreting the information. The foundation of SVT is the depiction of 3D terrain, which is displayed on the PFD(s). Land, water and sky are clearly differentiated with shading and textures that are similar to the topographical colors found on the multi-function display (MFD) moving map. SVT works seamlessly to alert pilots of potential ground hazards by displaying terrain and obstacles which pose a threat to the aircraft with appropriate TAWS alert coloring. Those flying with a TAWS-B enabled (optional) G1000 avionics suite also have the benefit of receiving voice alerts. Terrain warnings are also depicted on the MFD with a traditional, color-coded \X\ symbol. If the aircraft does not have TAWS-B enabled, reduced capability AC 23-26 compliant terrain alerting is included with SVT. Pilots will also appreciate SVTs pathways, or Highway-In-The-Sky (HITS) guidance. Depicted as 3D \flying rectangles\, pathway guidance symbols help pilots stay on course when flying en route legs, VNAV legs, GPS/WAAS vertical approach procedures, ILS approach procedures, and arrival and departure procedures. When on an ILS approach, pilots will take advantage of Garmins patent-pending system whereby SVT relies on ILS signals to position the pathway. Therefore, when pilots fly through the SVT boxes on an ILS approach, they will automatically fly the precision glideslope. Pathways may be enabled or disabled via a PFD softkey. SVT also brings MFD enhancements. At the nose of the MFDs aircraft graphic, pilots will see the field of view scan (45-degrees lateral scan) and flight path predictor that displays the aircrafts anticipated flight path. SVT is expected to be available on G900X-equipped aircraft by July 2008, and on the G1000 King Air C90 retrofit in 2009. Integration of SVT into existing G1000 systems or yet-to-be-delivered G1000 equipped aircraft is being coordinated with each aircraft manufacturer. ANNs Aero-TV crew caught up with Vern Raburn right after he gave the public go-ahead for the E400 and engaged in some frank discussion in Part Two of a chat with the Eclipse Boss. It was just a little over a month ago that Raburn told ANN that he was \thrilled\ to have the opportunity to introduce a new aircraft to the Eclipse Aviation family – the Eclipse 400 single-engine jet, the production version of the Eclipse Concept Jet (ECJ), which was first revealed at EAA AirVenture 2007 and profiled exclusively by Aero-TV. After completing 10 months of extensive research on the ECJ, Eclipse claimed that they were \confident this is the perfect aircraft for the emerging single-engine jet market. As many of you have experienced firsthand, this jet inspires people. It immediately captures their imaginations, and when they look a little closer and begin to grasp the level of performance and value it delivers – they are truly blown away.\ Previous Eclipse customers were the first allowed to place deposits on the 1.35 million dollar Eclipse 400. Public deposits will be accepted starting at EAA AirVenture 2008. The Eclipse 400 will be powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F engine. Eclipse expects that at an estimated 330 knots, it will use less than one pound of fuel per nautical mile — making it the world’s most fuel-efficient jet aircraft. Each year, as a \thank you\ to its 415,000 members, AOPA hosts an Annual Fly-In and Open House. As in past years, some 100 aviation exhibitors were available for viewing, as well as over 40 display aircraft. Seminars on aviation safety were offered, including presentations by Ron Machado and AOPA President Phil Boyer. Tours of the AOPA headquarters and non-stop opportunities to meet staff members were also offered throughout the day. This years event was hampered by two major obstacles... though neither of them kept thousands of people from flooding into AOPA HQ. The biggest roadblock was the imposition of a very poorly timed TFR in sympathy with the Presidents visit to Camp David... just a hop, skip and Touch and Go away. The temporary flight restriction over the presidential retreat at Camp David, Md. (Prohibited Area P-40), was expanded to its larger dimensions (in use when the President is in residence) starting June 6th and went right through the Fly-In. AOPA conducted an aggressive notification campaign to make sure that pilots were aware of this TFR... which like most of them, was offered with little warning and a scarcity of supporting info. The other issue was one of heat... LOTS of it. The AOPA Fly-In has, in the past, had to deal with lots of rain... but the wet stuff was nowhere to be seen this year as the temps hit the 100 mark and baked all who attended -- but once again, that didnt seem to stop many from making it to the Fly-In. Once on site, there was plenty to see. Dozens of exhibit aircraft flew in... including the recently introduced Cirrus SR22 with the Garmin Perspective system, the new Eclipse 400 S/E Jet and the Eclipse 500, the Diamond DA40, Cessnas C-400 (Aka Columbia), Pipers Matrix, The Liberty XL-2, a Gobosh LSA, the LoPresti Fury and much more. Aero-TV Looks Over the G800XP</td></tr><tr><td valign='top'>Details</td><td valign='top'>:</td><td>All-Composite Speedster Equipped With Chute Recently, Gobosh Aviation unveiled a new addition to their product line, the all-composite 800XP. Sporting rakish lines similar to several other low-wing LSAs -- more on that in a minute -- the 800XP is a Czech-designed-and-built aircraft, unlike the Polish-built G700S that kicked off Goboshs presence in the US last July. The aircraft boasts a \structural composite\ design, reducing the need for underlying metal frame supports. Gobosh adds performance also benefits from a high-performance laminar-flow wing, designed specifically for the US marketplace. The 800XP was designed by brothers Mirek & Petr Kabrt, brothers who are also responsible for the design of several other Czech-sourced LSA in the US, including the TL-2000 Sting Sport. So its no surprise to see the 800XP carries echoes of several other LSA. The 800XP also carries forth Goboshs nomenclature system, with \XP\ signifying a glass-cockpit-equipped aircraft, equipped with the GO-SAFE (Gobosh-Strategic Alternative For Emergencies) ballistic parachute system, sourced from Galaxy. (Of course, Gobosh likely wouldnt mind a bit if the planes designation brings to mind the \other\ 800XP in aviation, the one that carries the Hawker name.) A Dynon EFIS-D100 glass-panel system, sporting Garmin ancillary hardware, rounds out the avionics package. Initially, Gobosh will offer the 800XP in Elite and Elite+ configurations. Even standard Elite-equipped planes will sport Day or Night IFR capabilities (remember, sport pilot allows only Day-VFR operation) while the Elite+ planes will add to Goboshs \luxury\-sport aircraft advertising tagline with standard leather seats, Garmin GPS-396 with XM/WX capabilities, and Bose headset jacks. Like the G700S, all 800XPs will be backed by a two-year, 400-hour warranty. Powered by the ubiquitious Rotax 912ULS, the 800XP should offer cruising speeds close to the 120-knot upper limit for LSA. Gobosh notes the basis for the 800XP, the retractable-gear VL-3, holds the European speed record for Rotax-equipped microlights. Base prices for the 800XP are $123,700 for the Elite, and $129,990 for the Elite+. Both prices are spot-inline with similarly-equipped G700S models, meaning Gobosh customers have a choice between all-metal or all-composite airframes for roughly the same money. The company does note the G700S, with its classic \six pack\ of analog instruments and sturdy landing gear, is probably better suited for the training market, while the 800XP caters towards experienced private flyers.
